NJ Suppressor Ban

New Jersey Firearm Owners Syndicate has partnered with the American Suppressor Association Foundation (“ASA”) and Silencer Shop to challenge New Jersey’s unconstitutional state laws and regulations prohibiting New Jersey residents from acquiring suppressors.

Suppressors are essential safety devices that are subject to heavy federal regulation including obtaining pre-approval and a background check from the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, paying a $200 tax stamp to the ATF and registering those suppressors with the ATF.  Despite all of these additional steps gun owners across the US must undergo to ensure that suppressors, like all arms regulated under the National Firearms Act, are transferred to responsible and law abiding gun owners, New Jersey residents are still flatly prohibited from acquiring them under state law.

Over four million suppressors are in circulation in civilian hands in the United States, well above current legal definitions of common use, but those commonly held arms (as they are defined by Congress) are beyond the reach of New Jersey residents.  NJFOS is going to help bring an end to that prohibition.

In New Jersey, machine guns are not statutorily prohibited but suppressors are.  In many European nations, regarded as generally having stricter gun laws than the US, suppressors are not regulated at all.  In the US, there are only eight states that prohibit their use.  With the support of our members, gun owners across the state and our industry partners, NJFOS will help remove New Jersey from that list.

New Jersey Firearm Owners Syndicate will be working with ASA to promote corporate donations and a large portion of this goal will be funded by those industry partners.  But gun owners and hunters here in New Jersey can help by supporting this campaign with individual donations.  In addition, we believe FFL’s across the state will benefit from this litigation effort and NJFOS will encourage firearms dealers to make tax deductible donations to this project.  NJFOS will also be hosting some exciting fundraising events for this initiative in the near future.
